SOMALIA: FLEEING HUNGER
Half of the country estimated population of about 12 million needs emergency assistance.
The threat of famine persists in Somalia where more than 6 million people remain in need of humanitarian assistance. Millions of Somalis, who have suffered from severe droughts and decades of war, have been displaced from their homes and face extreme poverty and malnutrition.
The United Nations estimates that 17 percent of Somalia’s population are displaced or living as refugees in neighboring states.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) provides vital support to the affected populations whose lives and livehoods have been shattered.
Current IOM’s assistance in Somalia is focused on:
- Providing emergency relief (shelter materials and non-food items)
- Providing primary healthcare consultations including vaccination of children under 5 and antenatal care for pregnant women
- Providing malaria training for healthcare providers
- Providing clean and safe water in 8 regions
IOM’s teams are on the ground responding to the daily needs of displaced Somalis and helping them to survive, recover and regain control over their lives. IOM remains committed to help Somalis who have been forced out of their homes and to support those who are returning into their communities.
