In January 2010, a powerful earthquake hit Haiti with devastating impacts. An estimated 200,000 people were killed and 1.5 million were left homeless and internally displaced.
An estimated 200,000 Haitians crossed the border into the Dominican Republic as a result of the earthquake to seek refuge and medical care. Some have since returned to Haiti on their accord with no assistance, while others are choosing to voluntarily return with the assistance of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which provides the necessary transport and reintegration assistance for them to restart their lives in Haiti.
On a recent mission to assist the Haitian returnees, USAIM and IOM staff met with NGO partner CASA DEL CARIBE, a local organization with a long track record of working with Haitian migrants on both sides of the border. This year, they have been working with some U.S. based churches to help bring school supplies to an impoverish border town (Thiotte) in Southeastern Haiti where many displaced persons have returned. However, CASA DEL CARIBE has yet to distribute the supplies they’ve collected because they don’t have enough for all the school-age children in the area.
In order to help CASA DEL CARIBE with this noble initiative, USAIM is asking for your generous donation. Your donation of $27.30 will purchase 2 pencils, 2 notebooks, and 1 pencil sharpener for 10 children in the town of Thiotte.
