Human Trafficking Prevention and Assistance to Victims in Ukraine
Trafficking in human beings is one of the gravest forms of violation of human rights and transnational crime considered equal in its perils and consequences to trafficking of drugs and arms. Ukraine is a source, transit and increasingly destination country for human trafficking. An estimated 110,000 people have been trafficked from Ukraine since 1991. Men, women and children are trafficked for the purposes of sexual exploitation, forced labor, begging and other purposes. The main countries of destination for Ukrainian victims of trafficking are the Russian Federation, Poland and Turkey. An increase in internal trafficking for forced prostitution or agricultural labor was observed in recent years. 2010 saw a dramatic increase in the number of identified victimes, a trend which could be linked to the effects of economic crisis in Ukraine.
